[AnyWi] Quality of service for drones

 

AnyWi is developing a system to create such a link by combining multiple underlying connections (over LTE/5G, WiFi and in future satellite and direct radio) into a single C3+S link with a higher level of availability and reliability than is offered by each of the underlying links. 

This work will require development of algorithms to estimate the quality of service of the links by monitoring the data flows and possibly inject extra data (designed for low overhead) for the purpose. The algorithms should provide an estimate of the current state of the system as well as some degree of forecasting in time frames suited for the operational context of the drone. For instance, fast drones in dense airspace will have higher requirements than slow drones in sparsely occupied airspace.

Assignment

The project will encompass algorithms for reliable command, control, communication and security data links over multiple underlying links, for instance:

  • Methods to measure quality of service (QoS), reliability and availability of a single link and develop control algorithms to direct data traffic over the best available link
  • Architecture of a control plane at the UDP/IP protocol level to establish and maintain a reliable link from ground to drone and vice-versa

AnyWi’s current systems are implemented on Linux, based on commercially available communication modules.

Requirements

A self-motivated student with a strong background in linear algebra and statistical signal processing. In addition, a student with strong interest or experience is communication and/or embedded systems is preferred. Advanced coding skills in Python and/or C++ is required. Strong written and verbal communication skills in English is mandatory. The expected project duration is about 8 to 12 months.
