EE4736 Introduction imaging sensors

This course aims at providing you with the essentials of CMOS image sensors. The topic of CMOS image sensors is very active/hot these days: in consumer market, in the industrial arena, as well as in science & engineering. Thus, the job market & opportunities surrounding the field of image sensors is very high and expected to grow in future. This course aims at providing you with a solid foundation on this topic, and to serve as a stepping stone for you to progress towards more advanced image sensor topics.

Broadly, this course covers the following:

  1. Overview of the history and application of image sensors
  2. Semiconductor device physics of photodiodes (from basics)
  3. 3-Transistor and 4-Transistor CMOS image sensor pixels
  4. Design, layout & fabrication of image sensors
  5. Characterization of image sensors
  6. Advanced image sensor topics
  7. Introduction to Spectra - a device physics simulator tool

Study Goals

Be able to understand

  1. Semiconductor physics behind p-n junctions when used for photon detection
  2. How a CMOS image sensor pixel works and how to measure their properties
  3. The design and fabrication process of CMOS image sensor pixels
  4. Application of image sensors/camera systems
